If you follow me on social media, you’ve probably seen me mention or tag the Cameo App powered by Vimeo as one of my new favorite video editing platforms. Before you read any further, if you have an iPhone and take any kinds of video whatsoever, download this free app at once.
Here’s what I love about it. Sure there are many options available for you to edit your movie clips to compose one long video. But often they can be tedious and once you figure out a way to split clips, add slow motion effects and color grade your project, you’re so over it because of the frustration that has set in and there’s a good chance you might abandon the film all together.
Cameo has been around for a while, but just this summer they attempted a complete retool of the app. The results are nothing short of amazing.
Four things I love about this mobile video editing app.
– SLIDE CONTROLS for editing –
The ease of deciding what parts of your video you want in your clip are as simple as sliding the paddles to the beginning and ending of your selection. If you need to dial it in even closer, all you have to do is hold one of the paddles down and the rate in which it edits is down to a 1/10th of a second.
Once you get used to the controls, this will allow you to time your edits at exactly the right time in order to make that transition flow with the music.
– MUSIC SELECTION for your inner artist –
I did mention music, didn’t I? Song choice, if you’re producing a video can be a make or break deal. Lucky for us who use Cameo, the choice of music is vast and easy to upload. They have carefully selected a eclectic catalog of 12 unique genres of music to overlay on your video.
Perhaps you’d like to produce a video with a lot of movement from your clips, such as the one I embedded at the top of this post. Or, maybe you’re looking for a more cinematic feel to your compilation. No matter what mood your video takes, Cameo has a selection for you.
The other great part about the music selection is that many of these songs are from indie, up and coming artists who have partnered with Vimeo/Cameo to get their music heard (and for you to use freely).
– COLOR GRADING for a more cinematic feel –
One of the downsides of shooting video on the go or iPhone video for that matter is that the colors seen on the clip are sometimes not as pleasing to the eye as they could be. Think about how much we all love Instagram and the multitude of options for presenting our pictures in a beautiful light.
With the custom themes available to add to your project, the cinematic flair you’re looking for will be available right at your fingertips. Cameo provides 8 different filters, which you can adjust the intensity of, just by sliding your finger. Not only can you get a more vivid or warming yellow effect, but there’s also two separate black and white options should you want to go with a more classic look. I’ve tried all of them and you can’t go wrong with any.
– CUSTOM TITLES for your creativity –
Now this part is just plain fun, for me. If you’re uploading videos to YouTube or Facebook, you’re lucky to have a auto-generated thumbnail that you are happy with. However, with Cameo, right before you finalize your video, you are presented with the opportunity to scroll through and find the perfect frame to use as your video title screen.
You will then be have the option to give your project an overall title. Get creative. Think about what the theme to your creation means to you in just a few words. That will most certainly be a great heading for your project.
