Do you remember The Real World on MTV?  “Seven strangers, picked to live in a house…”  Well, we lived that life for five days in Costa Rica back in June.  Here is the video of that trip my wife and I were so fortunate enough to experience with six other couples (and best of friends).  Please enjoy, Pura Vida! Costa Rica!

Below is a little Q&A based on some of my thoughts in and around the filming, editing and creation of this vacation video of our trip to Costa Rica.

What was your favorite part of the video?

My GoPro after the Zip Lines

My GoPro after the Zip Lines

That is a tough question.  It’s almost like asking which one of your kids do you love the most?  However, if I had to pick a favorite scene or two it occurs when the song goes into the chorus, “Cause I’m on top of the world, eh” for the first time.  You will see a clip of my buddy Jason pop up of him riding down the zip line, it then transitions to myself riding down the same zip line. Naturally, I’ve seen this video a ton and never tire of my friends and families reaction to that part of the video.  My second favorite would be the choreographed underwater shots and sideways diving of the wives (yes, that is Jason that you see again participating with the girls).

How did you settle on the song, “On Top of The World” by Imagine Dragons?

It was one of those things that just seemed to nebulously occur.  As the trip got closer, I was wracking my brain as to what kind of music I wanted to base my overall theme to so I could set up a few shots that would mimic the lyrics once filming began in Costa Rica.  I knew I wanted something that would portray the overall sense that we were somewhere tropical and having fun.  About two weeks prior, this Imagine Dragons song came on the radio.  Immediately, it became quite obvious to me that this was the song I would use.

How long did it take you to edit the video?

We were in Costa Rica for five days.  I began working on the edits while in CR, a little bit everyday.  I put together a short movie trailer after our first day just so the group could see a tangible result and to help justify (in their minds, I guess) a method to my ever-recording video madness that I knew would follow.  The entire video was basically completed by the time we landed back in Atlanta, sans a few editing tweaks here and there.

There were 13 other people with you on the trip.  What was their reaction to you toting around your cameras the entire trip?

Oh I knew what I was getting into, bringing all of my video equipment.  Everyone who was on the trip has known each other for at least 10-15 years from our college days at the University of Georgia, so that helped.  Plus my wife was an all-in supporter.  However, I knew I would have to win my friends over just a little bit and couldn’t just start out like crazy camera man asking them to act naturally.  I took a great deal of friendly abuse from the first day of the trip, but after seeing some of the results in playback mode, everyone began to warm up to the camera(s).  By the second day of the vacation, all travelers seemed cool with the reality tv style situation our vacation had become and embrace the constant barrage of cameras.

What was the hardest part of the trip to capture?

1st time surfing - Getting some advice

1st time surfing, getting some advice

That’s an easy one.  Surfing.  About half of us ventured out to Jaco Beach, which was around 20 minutes from Los Sueños.  Oh, and I tried to surf initially and can readily admit, I was terrible.  So I ditched the surfboard for my GoPro with the three way mount, which allowed me to capture a ton of great action shots.  And what made it so hard?  The waves were about four feet and high tide was rolling in.  I paid the price a few times when I broke the old adage of, “Never turn your back to the ocean“.  Totally worth it though and Wow, was I proud of the girls, none of whom had ever surfed before, they made it look easy and graceful.

Where did you stay?

At the Los Sueños Resort in Herradura, Costa Rica.  Nicest house I’ve ever vacationed at.  Thanks John and Mandi for helping with these world class accommodations.  I would highly recommend anyone to visit the country of Costa Rica.  From the beautiful scenery, to the all out friendliness of the Costa Rican citizens, it was five days that I won’t soon forget.

Did anything special happen while on your vacation?

Celebrating Costa Rica's World Cup win over Uruguay

Celebrating Costa Rica’s World Cup win over Uruguay

Our trip coincided with Costa Rica’s 1st game in the group stage of the World Cup.  The US Mens National Team had not yet played a game, so none of us were that invested in World Cup Fever yet.  Costa Rica defeated Uruguay in an upset that Saturday during our visit and the entire place around us erupted in song, dance and celebration.  It truly was unlike anything I had ever seen before.  You will see two clips that help give a small taste as to what it was like.  The one part where you see flags waving as we drove through the town of Jaco.  Every person in the city was out sporting their national pride and an impromptu parade just magically happened, which we were fortunate enough to be a part of.  Another shot in the video was of our surf instructor, Antonio at our hacienda celebrating with some of the girls when the game was finishing up.  Los Ticos and Pura Vida were being shouted from all parts of the country.

And now on to the video.  I hope you enjoy watching Pura Vida! Costa Rica! as much as I did filming and editing it.
